Where did the banana originally originate?

It is believed that the banana first grew in southern Asia and that through many centuries it spread through the East and to the West. The Mohammedans called the banana tree a paradise tree, and the Hindus believed the banana tree was sacred to their goddess Kali.
Antonius Musa was the personal physician to Roman emperor Octavius Augustus, and it was he who was credited for promoting cultivation of the exotic African fruit the banana from 63 to 14 B.C.
Wild Banana's still exist in New Guinea. They are thought to have originated in Southeast Asia.
